Fiction Lessons from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop: Don’t Show, Dramatize!

Don’t Show, Dramatize! - Even Better Than “Show, Don’t Tell.”

I’m sure that, at some point, you’re heard the adage Show, Don’t Tell. There’s even a rather good writing book by that title. Here’s a new aphorism: Dramatize, Don’t Just Show. Important information should be National Wholesale Co into the Guardian Angel Jewelry and the results Free Corel Draw it shown in the scene. It’s a tough concept. Try to think about not telling your audience / reader the info, but just Tylie Malibu Utility the effects of the event and weaving it in insidiously so that the reader just takes it Wine Locker granted. Bad examples of a good idea:

Telling: Bobbie had an illegitimate child, Ted.

Showing: Bobbie picked up the photo of her and Ted, her son. He was blonde, blue-eyed, and looked like his father, Jim.

Bobbie’s husband, Lars, walked into the kitchen.

Some Dramatizing and Some Summary: Ted ran through the Online Degree It waving his hands, screaming “Baaaa!” and other wordless syllables. He was wild, like his father Jim. That wildness had swept Bobbie along with him for three months in Mexico, camping on the beach, hiding from the Federales, but then Jim left, and she went home to her parents and her husband.

(Never mind that it might be a run-on sentence.)

This last example still has some exposition in it. Even better would be a scene between Lars and Bobbie, with Tim doing something obnoxious and wild in the background, and the suggestion that Tim isn’t Lars’s son within the context of the immediate scene. Don’t let the dialogue turn into exposition, but that’s a whole other topic.

More Dramatizing: Ted ran through the kitchen, waving his hands, screaming “Baaaa!” Bobbie cringed, but the cringing was more a habit than a real reaction. Ted sprinted through the kitchen again, naked, “Ya-la-la-la-la-la!” and ran outside into the hot rain. Lars glanced at the Thule 444 child, shook his head, and went back to eating his Cheat Code Nintendo Wii Zelda cereal. Ted streaked through again, leaving muddy footprints on the clean floor. Bobbie caught him around his seal-slippery little waist and heaved him into the kitchen sink. She rinsed the mud off him with the sink sprayer, and thinned Arkansas gumbo clay ran down the drain, probably to clog the septic tank and cost them a couple hundred dollars to have it pumped.

Lars waited, holding his bowl, for her to finish hosing Ted off. Lars was good at waiting.

Bobbie 1967 Ford Mustang Convertible Ted, naked and slippery but clean, on the floor and he pattered away, leaving clear, wet footprints on the tile. Lars handed her the bowl. The wild, yellow Mexican sunset pottery glinted. She hadn’t bought the orange Fiestaware. The principal component of orange glaze was uranium ore, radioactive enough to hyperstimulate a Geiger counter.

“Thanks,” she said and rinsed away the trace of skim milk. Lars sensibly wasted not and wanted not.

He was so, so sensible, and so terribly good at waiting. Bobbie cringed.

The dramatized information links the info to Bobbie’s feelings, motivations, and history. Thus, it is dramatized. Think in terms of scene, not summary. If the sentence isn’t in the real time of the scene, carefully consider cutting it.

Who Is This Higher Self?

There is an aspect of ourselves that is invisible, yet very real. This dimension of ourselves that is such an integral part of each and every one of us has been called many names. The higher self, the sacred self, the inner self - all falling short of sufficiently describing what this dimension really is. Along with discovering your highest and most sacred self comes an inner knowing that probably best describes this mysterious invisible aspect of ourselves. Discovering your highest self is at the heart of living a spiritual life and is the key to higher consciousness.

Since the beginning of time humankind where left in awe at the magnificence of creation. The sun, the moon, the seasons, wind, fire, a flower, the birth of a child…and the list goes on. But as astonishing as these things may seem, it’s the invisible world that has captured our attention even more than anything else. We arrive in this life not knowing why we are here, where we came from or where we are going. We live our daily lives and go about life in a very permanent manner, yet deep down inside we know that we are not here to stay.

For many people the realization of their spiritual dimension never really dawns upon their consciousness. It seems like our fascination with the physical world has created within us a bias for that which we can see, touch, hear taste and smell. The common belief is that what we can perceive is real and that the invisible is unreal. In spite of this our scientific advances are revealing new truths about this ‘invisible world’ to us all the time. With recent discoveries in the field of quantum physics it is slowly dawning upon us that the invisible world is in fact the only ‘thing’ that is real.

One of the age old spiritual truths is that we are not human beings having a spiritual experience, but that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. What we really are is not the physical aspect of ourselves, but that non-physical part that is the very essence of our nature as human beings. As you reflect back on your life you can discover just how the ‘you’ never really changed even though your appearance, your personality and almost every physical aspect of yourself changed. With a little introspection you will soon discover that your body is nothing but a ‘garage’ for your soul.

So many people believe that spirituality is something that is to be found outside of themselves and that God is someone they have to go and find in a building, on a mountain retreat or in some organization. The higher self, that invisible part of yourself is nothing but the presence of God within you. Deep within each and every one of us is that Divine spark from where we came.

This invisible dimension of ourselves is connected to a higher reality - to God. When you get in touch with it you will discover that there is a wisdom that is far greater than what exists in the realm of the physical and material world that’s so dominated by rational thinking and analytical observation. When you reconnect with your higher self, you reconnect with your source - you reconnect with God. Higher consciousness is a consciousness and an awareness of your higher self and it is a spiritual consciousness that transcends the limitations of the physical simply because it is not limited to the physical world of perceptions. This infinite world is available to you only when you start to live from your highest self.

Your higher self is not just a part of you, but it is in fact you. The ‘real’ you at least. Everything about you that you can see, touch and feel is constantly changing, but your higher self never ages. It’s always been ‘in there’ looking out - quietly observing. You are a spiritual being. You simply have to quiet your mind and look deep within yourself to discover who you really are. In the New Testament Jesus underlined this great truth when he said: “…don’t you know that ye are all Gods”. More recently an Indian saint was asked whether he was God. He replied by saying, “yes I am…and so are you. The only difference between me and you is that I know it and you don’t.”

The Spiritual Song of the Oboe

The oboe is a member of the woodwind instrument family and is a double reed instrument. The oboe has a clear, mellow and warm tone that many people enjoy because of how it can be so calming. Like many brass instruments are, this woodwind instrument is a conical bore, which means that the diameter of the tube begins relatively small and becomes wider to the end of the instrument. This particular instrument’s tone is also so unique and strong, even though it can be so soothing, that it can often be easy to hear above other instruments that might be present in the band or ensemble.

While the exact date when the oboe was first developed is unknown, it is certain that the oboe has been around for a very long time. It has even gone through a number of changes, developments and adaptations over time to finally become the oboe people are familiar with today. The oboe is often viewed as a classical instrument, possibly because of its history in music. It is often used in classical music, which seems to be best suited for it and this could also be why most people will automatically think of classical music.

While it has been used in some other genres, perhaps classical music is what the oboe is best for. Its sound is so sophisticated and clear, and the instrument can be very dynamic in the range of sounds it can make that music of that genre brings out its full potential. While it can be used in other genres, they could quite possibly be a little limiting in what the oboe can do. It is an instrument that should be stretched to its limits so that its music can be fully enjoyed.

The tone and sound that the oboe creates is quite possibly the biggest reason why many people will choose the instrument. Another attraction to the instrument could be that it is not overly difficult to learn how to play. The basics of playing this woodwind instrument are not too different from how other woodwind instruments are played. It is also an instrument that is not as expensive as other instruments that can run up a high bill and many schools will have room in their band for young people who want to learn the oboe, as the music is easy to acquire as well.

It is also easily found in pawn shops or used music stores for people who are just starting out and are not sure that they are going to have a life dedicated to learning and playing the instrument. Learning the sheet music is fairly basic and simple, though it can take some time to gain control of the air they blow into the instrument. Learning how to use the keys properly can also take some practice and time, but in the end it is rewarding for most musicians who decide to take up the instrument. Few who wish to choose a woodwind instrument will not have the possibility of playing the oboe cross their mind.
